Hathor

Our Namesake

Hathor is Ra's feminine counterpart.

Her head is adorned with cow horns (symbolising nourishment) and the sun disk (symbolising the giver of life). In her hands, she carries the Was Sceptre and Ankh (symbols of authority and life).

Hathor is the Egyptian Neteru of music, dancing, and joy. The walls of her temple are covered in images of musicians and hieroglyphs of music theory.

The most prominent Temple of Hathor is at Dendera, a little north of Luxor, Egypt. The current structure is circa 3500 years old, but it was rebuilt to an earlier plan, so it's true age is unknown.

Pythagoras spent 22 years studying in Egypt. (Yes, even the famous rules about triangles were not conceived by Pythagoras: they are found in Egyptian documents from thousands of years before Pythagoras. He just brought them back to Greece and popularised them).

Even the Egyptians themselves did not take credit for their musical system. The claimed that they had be taught music by the Neter Thoth, deity of the Moon, wisdom, knowledge, writing, hieroglyphs, science, magic, art and judgment.

On his return to Greece, Pythagoras taught music theory as one of many areas of knowledge that he brought back with him. In the middle ages, Europeans discovered Greek musical texts and based their music on the theories they found. And so European music owes its origins to Ancient Egypt.

Our ScaleRule webapp works on Pythagorean principles.

Our 'temple' is dedicated to the study of music theory. We hope your journey is as inspiring as ours has been.
